Collection: David Lidbetter | Old Hull: An Artist's Journey of Forgotten Memories

March 8 - 22

Old Hull: An Artist’s Journey of Forgotten Memories is a series that explores the lost stories and fading history of Old Hull. Through evocative brushstrokes and rich textures, I capture the spirit of forgotten places, shifting landscapes, and personal recollections, inviting viewers on a nostalgic journey through time. Each piece serves as a tribute to the city’s past, blending memory and imagination to preserve its essence before it fades away.

My thought process for painting pictures of Old Hull is that my fading memory reflects my deep sense of nostalgia, my desire to preserve fleeting moments, and an acknowledgment of the passage of time. By focusing on Old Hull, I'm drawn to capturing the beauty of places that are slowly being forgotten, either due to urbanization, decay, or simply the erosion of memory itself.

These paintings could serve as a tribute to what was once familiar and vibrant, now slipping away into history. In painting
these scenes, I can freeze these moments, as if to hold onto them before they are lost completely. Yet, there is also beauty in the process, in capturing something fading before it’s gone, revealing its hidden layers, subtleties, and quiet significance.
